Poeplemovin
developed this interactive world migration data visualization which is presented as a slopegraph connecting various countries based on migration flows. The source for this data analytics piece is the
Bilateral Migration Matrix
by the World Bank. This, undoubtedly one the best data visualization examples of migration patterns, is divided in two columns. The origin countries are on the left and immigration countries on the right. You can click on a country to the left to see its migrant outflow or highlight a country on the right to visualize the inflow. The thickness of the connecting lines corresponds to migration volumes. As seen on the screenshot below, one of the main destinations for Greek emigrants is Germany given a thicker line connecting these two European countries.
Clicking on a country also activates a window which shows the country’s overall population, number of emigrants/immigrants and migrant origins/destinations.
